Mint Julep anyone? A Kentucky Derby soiree came to D.C. on September 19th, with a star packed VIP screening of Disney’s Secretariat movie. After a showing of the movie at AMC Georgetown, complete with free popcorn and soda, plus an introduction from Oscar winning director, Randall Wallace, our group sipped lovely at the exclusive and private Ritz Carlton, nestled in a little nook off 31st street NW.

I have to admit that I didn’t know much about horse racing, although I lived down the street from Rosecroft Raceway in high school. Somehow I never walked up there to see a race. Suddenly I was surrounded by hand-picked equestrian professionals, invited because of their involvement in rearing, selling, training, commentating horse races and even acting in the movie.

Secretariat was a total surprise! Not just a movie about horses, but compassionately weaved with powerful stories highlighting women’s power at home and in the board room, the behind-the-scenes impact of African-Americans in the racing industry, male chauvinism and the belief it takes to become a winner when all odds point against it.

I think kids, horse enthusiasts, competitive folks and even those who think racing doesn’t interest them, should have a chance to see Secretariat. Also, the movie has a local twist! Read the trivia below to see why!

I partnered with Allied Integrated Marketing, the company who brings screenings to D.C., to give away passes for these upcoming screenings:

Trivia facts:

  • Pictured with Secretariat Director, Randall Wallace (wearing blue suit), famous for writing and directing Mel Gibson's Braveheart ,Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck and We Were Soldiers.

  • Interviewed the author of the book that started it all: William Nack, “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion”. Mr. Nack lives in Chevy Chase, D.C.! Nack wrote for Sports Illustrated for 35 years and started the Secretariat project five years ago. He said, “The arc of the movie was good. Diane Lane was a perfect Penny Miller. Malchovich put a lot of energy into his role and reflected the maturity of Lucian brilliantly.”

  • Grant Whitacre, Maryland resident, and Tom Foley , of Ireland, pose in front of poster. Both play jockeys in the movie.

  • Secretariat also won the Preakness in Baltimore. One of Maryland’s veteran racing commentators is pictured with the stuffed horse.

  • In 1973, Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting race records that still stand today in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.

  • Penny Chenery, now 87, is an integral resource in the making of the film. She also appears as an extra in one of the film’s scenes.

Thanks to Allied Integrated Marketing and Disney for this opportunity!
