AMF Free Summer Bowling FAQs According to The Frugal Socialite
The AMF Summer Unplugged program is a tremendous value, but there are a few things that aren’t completely explained on the website. I took a group to AMF the evening after I did the Fox5 News report and we encountered several issues in trying to use the program’s passes. Don’t get all the way to the bowling alley with excited kids in tow and get jammed like we did! Even though we didn’t have all the pieces in order, the management really wants the program to work for you, so they bent over backwards to make sure we could bowl. That was a lucky break, but may not be the norm!
AMF Summer Unplugged FAQ’s by The Frugal Socialite:

How many coupons do I receive each week?
One coupon per child per week. The children’s coupons are reusable all week. All coupons are sent via email. Nothing is available in the bowling center itself. This is administered entirely by email. Sign up at www.freebowling.amf.com
When do I get my pass?
Regardless of when you sign up, the passes are sent every Sunday. There is a cut-off time, like Friday or Saturday at midnight, so you must sign up before that time to get yourself in the pass email schedule for that week. The pass is reusable, so the bowling center should give it back after each visit during that week. Each week a new pass is sent to your email. It has to be printed unless the bar code can be scanned from a smartphone.
I got my confirmation email but didn’t receive my coupons?
If you sign up during the week, you will not receive a coupon until Sunday. If you go into the center with your confirmation number and/or email ONLY, you will not be able to bowl under the free program terms. The centers are not equipped to look up your account.
I can’t find the confirmation email and I’m trying to purchase the Adult Pass?
You have to call the customer service center, 800 342 5263, to get the number. You can also request one by email, however, the turn-around time is not instant! I requested my confirmation by email and as of 17 hours later, I still don’t have a response. If you are trying to make this work for a same day visit, be advised it may not happen that quickly.
When do I get the actual coupon for the Adult Pass?
No matter what day of the week you sign up for the Adult Pass, you will not receive it via email until Sunday. Sign up at freebowling.amf.com
Do I have to visit the same bowling center each time?
Yes, because not all the centers participate in the program. You need a set of passes for each center that you plan to visit. The same pass will not work at another location. If you think you may visit different centers, you need to sign up under a different email address for another location. You also need another Adult Pass for the next location.
Is this a league?
No, there's no "organized" play or league involved in this program.
There is a tournament at each center where kids get free gift cards for having the highest score each week. To play, you record the child's score on the Summer Unplugged Score Sheet and turn in to the desk before leaving. The center chooses the highest score and posts the child's name each week. The $10 gift card is a weekly prize.
Do I have to rent shoes?
Yes. Shoe rental is not included. At some centers, like Alexandria, VA, the management permits white soled tennis shoes. You must carry the shoes inside the center in a bag and only wear them INDOORS, while bowling. This is a privilege and not the rule. The managers can refuse the shoes if they appear dirty on the bottom or seem to be used for street wear. Don’t argue about it because it’s an exception and a favor that will save you hundreds of dollars by the end of the Summer! Get a cheap pair of shoes from Target, Walmart, Kmart or Costco and keep them for bowling only. Actual bowling shoes are also discounted on www.zappos.com, www.bowlingball.com , and www.beso.com.
Remember, if your center’s management doesn’t allow the tennis shoes, they are acting appropriately and within guidelines.
Improve your score, beat the heat and create lots of Frugally Fabulous Fun for your family with AMF this Summer!
The Frugal Socialite Quoted in May's Essence Magazine Economic Enjoyable Experiences with Friends—Frugal Socialite Style!
In these technology hyped days, me and my girls talk by Bluetooth, text and email. Planning to see each other in a home setting, where we can take off shoes, vent, laugh loudly and reconnect is a treat.
Girls' night at home is a relaxing, low effort endeavor: No cover charges, no Spanx, no line for a table and good talk with no strangers in earshot.
Imagine my thrill when a reporter from Essence Magazine contacted me for a quote for May's Essence, with Wendy Williams on the cover. On page 157, above the popcorn picture, you'll see a BRIEF, edited blurb of my thoughts on how to have a Frugal Fun Fest with your girls. ![]()
THANKS so much to Stacy Gilliam, who wrote a fab feature on friendships. And, great appreciation to Nicole Nelson, who suggested my Frugal Socialite prowess to Stacy, which kicked this thing off.
As The Frugal Socialite I wear many fly hats: Travel writer, broadcast personality, marketing partner to many small businesses and Party Planner extraordinaire! The Frugal Socialite company started as cake decorating and catering business in the '90s, way before The Ace of Cakes and D.C. Cupcakes made this a trend.
My tagline used to be Pampered Promotions & Parties for Pennies…I still can make that happen. If you need a quick party (executed in less than a week), a shower, meeting, soiree, wedding or any large fest, call me! I can create magic with the smallest of budgets. Area teens learned the steps to success at Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey
Appeared in The Washington Informer, February 2009 Two attendants guarded heavy curtains that enclosed a private, V.I.P. access only area at the close of the Disney's Dreamers Academy of 2009. Inside were 100 of Disney's special guests, who got a rare chance to talk one-on-one with comedian, actor and nationally syndicated radio personality, Steve Harvey, who gave them straight dialogue, "like I talk to my kids", about not letting the bad things in life deter their dreams. This was not a time for camera clickers or any interference to distract from the message that was no jokes, no chasers, a side of Harvey that many have never seen... READ rest of article
Oprah Encourages Women to Find Purpose and Intention in Their Lives
At 6 a.m., well-dressed women began a line that would perimeter the Washington Convention Center by 9:15 a.m. From all the brightly colored pantsuits and nearly new Nine West pumps on the pavement, you'd have thought a model call or a sorority meeting was about to jump off.
Last Saturday, Oprah Winfrey inspired a sold out D.C. crowd at her Live Your Best Life Tour, a three-city road show, sponsored by O, The Oprah Magazine. Women and a handful of men came from as far as Nova Scotia, paying $185 or more for a chance to get up-close life advice from the award winning media magnate.
Oprah on Life, Work and Chasing Dreams
Oprah Winfrey took her show on the road with her O Magazine’s Live Your Best Life Tour and BV caught up with the talk-show queen at the sold-out event on its stop in Washington, D.C. America’s favorite sistergirl let her funny side fly, joking frequently and laughing with an open heart. For the most part, though, she remained serious, mentoring 5,000 women and a sprinkling of men for a full two hours, connecting her struggles with the audience. Oprah spoke directly to the anxiety, self-doubt and hurt in people who have wrestled with emptiness in their career, indecision, layoffs, weight or lack of direction. Here are a few personal revelations from Oprah:
Meet Mac McDonald, Winemaker
Mac McDonald is one of a select few. As the head of Vision Cellars, a California vineyard and winery in Sonoma County, he is one of only a handful of African-American vineyard owners in the United States.
McDonald, founder and president of the Association of African-American Vintners, broke into the industry in 1995 by forming a relationship with Caymus, a respected wine label. Then, he raised $82,000 in venture capital on his own, pocket change in the cash-rich wine industry. Most winemakers, he says, come from old money and most successful people in the business are obsessed with the bottom line. McDonald stresses, though, that he wants to make money but he doesn’t make it his sole focus. He and his wife Lil use their own money to travel around the country, cultivating a new crop of African-American aficionados.
BV spoke with McDonald recently about what it takes to break into the winery business.
